A native of Los Angeles, Steven Robinson has established himself as a versatile musician. In addition to his skill as a jazz trombonist, he has worked as a session musician on projects from indie film scores to punk rock records, vocalist for Christmas caroling companies, music educator for ages 4 all the way to 78, and arranger/composer/transcriber of many genres.
Steven’s first musical experiences were with his family, singing in church services and watching his Grandad play piano at birthdays and Christmas parties. He first picked up guitar as a result of his love for classic rock music, and then began playing the trombone in middle school. His high school jazz band was featured in multiple festivals, including The Monterey Jazz Festival and The Midwest Clinic. In his senior year, the ensemble recorded an album with trumpeter/composer John Daversa.
In 2014, Steven was selected to tour the U.S. and Japan with the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra as its bass trombonist. He went on to earn his Bachelor's Degree from USC’s Thornton School of Music, where he worked with artists such as Andy Martin, Patrice Rushen, Paul Jackson Jr., and Bob Mintzer. He took advantage of every opportunity, from recording sessions at Capitol Records to playing in pit orchestras and countless student pop groups. He ended his time at USC on a high note when he was asked to tour nationally with Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman John Fogerty in the Summer of 2018, and later internationally in the Fall.
Steven then earned his Master's Degree in 2020 from University of Miami's Frost School of Music, where he worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and studied trombone with Dante Luciani. During his time at UM, he gained valuable teaching experience as he taught classes and directed/co-directed various ensembles. He also recorded on Brian Lynch's GRAMMY® Award-Winning album, "The Omni-American Book Club", and performed at Disneyland as a member of the 2019 All-American College Band.
Other artists Steven has performed with or recorded for include Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, The John Daversa Progressive Big Band, Michael Bublé, Jason Goldman, Jacob Mann, Wayne Bergeron, Ryan DeWeese, Sal Lozano, Gregg Field, Jiggs Whigam, Jo Lawry, Peter Eldridge, Tom Kubis, and Eric Harland.
Currently, Steven performs at Disneyland as a full-time member of The Straw Hatters. He also plays with a variety of big bands, small groups, and corporate/wedding bands.
In addition to performing, Steven thoroughly enjoys working as an educator, offering private lessons in trombone among other brass instruments, as well as beginning lessons in both guitar and bass guitar. He also loves directing and coaching student jazz ensembles.
